What happens next
The investigation now moves toward the injury hearing and determination. Any remedy phase depends on the Commission's injury determination. Dates remain subject to the ITC's official schedule.
ITC investigation begins
USTR referred the matter on July 13, 2026, and the ITC instituted its Section 201 investigation into lamb meat.
Questionnaire period closed
The ordinary questionnaire response period has ended. The ITC is continuing its investigation and considering the evidence in the record.
Injury hearing
The ITC is scheduled to hold its injury hearing, where it will hear testimony as part of its assessment of the effect of imports on the U.S. industry.
ITC determination
The Commission is due to determine whether increased imports are a substantial cause of serious injury, or threat of serious injury, to the domestic industry. An affirmative or equally divided determination leads to a remedy phase; it does not itself impose restrictions.
ITC remedy hearing
This hearing will take place only if the Commission makes an affirmative injury determination or is equally divided. It would consider what action, if any, the ITC should recommend.
Report submitted to the President
The ITC is due to submit its findings and, if applicable, remedy recommendations to the President.
Presidential decision
Any decision to impose a safeguard is separate from the ITC investigation. The President can accept a recommended remedy, choose a different remedy, or take no action.
